Considering Matthew Shepard (2016) by Craig Hella Johnson is a powerful and soulful musical response to the death of Matthew Shepard (1976–1998), a University of Wyoming student murdered in Laramie, Wyoming, apparently because of his homosexuality.

Perhaps the first modern Passion that deals explicitly with an LGBTQ+ subject, the concert-length work of three parts—Prologue, Passion, Epilogue—is Johnson’s most ambitious composition to date by a wide margin. It is scored for mixed chorus, vocal soloists/narrators, piano, clarinet, strings, percussion, and guitar. Johnson sets a wide range of poetic texts by Hildegard von Bingen, Rumi, Lesléa Newman, and Michael Dennis Browne; additional texts are sourced from Matt’s own notebook, words from his parents Judy and Dennis Shepard, and newspaper reports, compiled and crafted by Johnson and Browne.

The work premiered in 2016 in Austin, Texas with Conspirare and Johnson. The A&P Choir is proud to present the Quebec premiere and the third production of the full work in Canada. Please join us in this life-changing journey as we contemplate and be transformed by Matthew’s story.

Considering Matthew Shepard (2016) de Craig Hella Johnson est une réponse musicale puissante et pleine d'âme à la mort de Matthew Shepard (1976-1998), un étudiant de l'Université du Wyoming assassiné à Laramie, Wyoming, en apparence à cause de son homosexualité.

Possiblement la première Passion moderne qui aborde explicitement un thème LGBTQ+, cette œuvre en trois parties - Prologue, Passion, Épilogue - est de loin la composition la plus ambitieuse de Johnson à ce jour. Elle est écrite pour chœur mixte, voix solo/narrateurs, piano, clarinette, cordes, percussions et guitare. Johnson met en scène un large éventail de textes poétiques de Hildegard von Bingen, Rumi, Lesléa Newman et Michael Dennis Browne ; des textes supplémentaires proviennent du propre carnet de Matt, de mots de ses parents Judy et Dennis Shepard, et de reportages de journaux, compilés et élaborés par Johnson et Browne.
